Nino Surguladze
Born in Tbilisi (Georgia), after studying journalism she graduated with honours from the conservatory in her hometown. She was awarded the Presidential Order of Excellence by the Georgian Republic for her contributions to culture and the promotion of the Georgian cause abroad; she was decorated as Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella of Italy.
She is the winner of major competitions such as the ‘Concours International de Chant de la Ville de Toulouse’, the ‘Francisco Viñas’ in Barcelona, and the ‘BBC Singer of the World’ in Cardiff, as well as the GBOSCAR Award for Excellence in Opera and Dance.
She completed her musical training at Accademia del Teatro alla Scala under the guidance of Leyla Gencer, Luciana Serra and Luigi Alva. She then made her debut in different productions at La Scala: Iphigénie en Aulide, Boris Godunov (Fjodor), Oberto, Conte di San Bonifacio (Cuniza).
She made her debut in Moïse et Pharaon (Marie) conducted by Riccardo Muti for the opening of the season of Teatro alla Scala, where she then sang: Falstaff (Meg Page); Evgeni Onegin (Olga); Idomeneo (Idamante); Cherevichki (Solocha); Faust (Siebel); Nabucco (Fenena); Die lustige Witwe (Valencienne).
She subsequently sang: Les contes d'Hoffmann (Niklhausse) in Turin and Hamburg; La damnation de Faust (Marguerite) in Parma and Liège; Così fan tutte (Dorabella) in Genoa, at London's Covent Garden, at Tokyo's Suntory Hall and in Valencia; Carmen in Graz, Latvian, Naples, Otsu, Tokyo's Bunka Kain, Bologna, Hamburg, at the Seoul Korea Opera House, in Bari, San Diego, Macerata, at Seoul's Arts Center, in Sassari and at Marinsky; Nabucco (Fenena) at the Arena di Verona, in Piacenza and at the Festival Castell in Perelada; Lady Macbeth of the district of Mtsenk (Sonjetka) in Barcelona; Luisa Miller (Federica) in Naples, at Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, in Barcelona and with the Budapest Symphony Staat Orstestra; Idomeneo (Idamante) in Hamburg; Rigoletto (Maddalena) in Madrid, at Metropolitan in New York, in Bogotà, Macerata, Genoa, Cologne and for RAI with Placido Domingo; Evgeni Onegin (Olga) at the Metropolitan in New York, at Covent Garden in London and at the Lyric Opera in Chicago; Moïse et Pharaon (Sinaide) at Salzburg Festival and in Rome; La clemenza di Tito (Sesto) in Hamburg; Ariodante in Frankfurt; Lucrezia Borgia (Maffio Orsini) at Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich; Madama Butterfly (Suzuki) in Tokyo; Aida (Amneris) in Naples, Bergen, Liège and Bari; Cavalleria rusticana (Santuzza) in Avignon; Norma (Adalgisa) in Beirut; Roméo et Juliette (Stéphano) at Arena di Verona; I Capuleti e i Montecchi (Romeo) in Bergen.
She has worked with important conductors such as: R. Abbado, Arrivabeni, Biondi, Bisanti, Callegari, Fournillier, Gelmetti, Harding, Jordan, Luisi, Luisotti, Mehta, Muti, Noseda, Oren, Palumbo, Plasson, Rustioni, etc... and directors such as: Bieito, de Ana, Micheli, Pizzi, Vick, Wilson, etc...
She has an intense concert schedule, including: the Christmas Concert at St. Mark's Church in Milan, conducted by Maestro Muti; Dvorak's Requiem at the Berliner Philharmonie; Schubert's Mass No. 6 at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam; Verdi's Requiem Mass at the Bustan Festival in Beirut; Beethoven's 9th Symphony at Accademia di Santa Cecilia; recitals at the Wigmore Hall in London; a concert dedicated to the memory of Leyla Gencer in Istanbul.
Her recent and future engagements include: Carmen in Liège and Valladolid; Aida (Amneris) in Bologna, Hong Kong, Liège, at the NCPA in Beijing and in La Coruna; Alceste in Florence directed by Pier Luigi Pizzi; Rigoletto at the San Carlo in Naples, at Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia, at Shanxii Grand Theatre and at Liceu in Barcelona; Le trouvère (Azucena) at Verdi Festival in Parma conducted by Roberto Abbado under the direction of Robert Wilson and, in an Italian version, conducted by Pinchas Steinberg at Teatro Comunale di Bologna and in Palma de Mallorca; La forza del destino (Preziosilla) in Liège and Bologna; Les contes d'Hoffmann (Giulietta) at Liceu in Barcelona; Verdi's Messa da Requiem with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Montecarlo conducted by Maestro Gianluigi Gelmetti; Nabucco (Fenena) at Petruzzelli in Bari; Prokofiev's L'angelo di fuoco and Madama Butterfly (Suzuki) at Teatro Real in Madrid; Evgenij Onegin (Olga) at Teatro di San Carlo in Naples; the title role in La lupa and the world premiere of Marco Tutino's Il berretto a sonagli (Assunta Labella) at Teatro Bellini in Catania; Rusalka (Ježibaba) and Kát'a Kabanová (Marfa Kabanová) in Liège.
